Oak did bring up a very good point and I figured it would be smart to move the discussion here. I'm not 100% sure how it works and I think I get at least 1 but confused on it all really. I think when I made the Pablo Lopez trade I made it in mind thinking I get a Comp pick from this. Corbin Burnes might be but not sure.
Corbin Burnes SP -MIL
Framber Valdez SP -HOU
Justin Steele SP -CHC Jordan Montgomery - FA (Talks of going back to NYY)
NYM let go of Valdez, and I don't know who let go of the other players.

I asked cubs this a while ago
"I have Kimbrel (35), Nola (45), and Montgomery (46) as top 50 ranked guys but Montgomery is a str8 unrestricted free agent. I'll get a draft pick comp for him?
If I decline option for Kimbrel and decline Nola real life contract where they both go to FA, will I get a pick for both of them too?"
And he said
"Yes. You’ll get a pick for Kimbrel and Nola if you decline them. But not Montgomery."
Pablo Lopez is on the Padres and has a 500k option for 2024 then a UFA so I assume if Lopez is a top 50 player from 2023 and Padres declines him then he would get a 1st round comp pick but you wouldn't get a pick for Lopez.

If people just naturally have their contract expire there is no comp pick regardless of top 50 rsnking from my understanding it's only from declining an option or maybe even declining a real life extension

Yes, that is true. The comp pick is to help persuade you to put the player in free agency a year earlier.
