Minimum IP

For the first 6 years, we had the weekly minimum innings be at 30. With covid, we lowered it to 20 since pitchers might be out and games might be postponed or canceled.

Now, it looks like (hopefully) we are back to normal. Should we stay with 20 or go back to 30?

It doesn’t matter to me, but having it at 20 kind of makes SP depth less important. You can win with 1 or 2 SP and load your teams up with setup/closers to get the 20 innings. I know when I won, I wouldn’t even play half my SP in a big week cause I wouldn’t need them. But at 30 IP, you would need SP to get you innings.

I have no opinion on the innings, but I'd like to bring something else up. Not for 2023, but moving forward, can we look for a stat to replace QS? I know we need a starting pitcher dependent stat, but did y'all realize that were 2487 stolen bases in the 2022 MLB season, but only 1776 QS? We have 20 teams. The season is more than 20 weeks long. But even if we just assume 20 weeks x 20 teams, that's 400. 1776/400 is not even 4.5. It's a random chance stat that is increasingly difficult to find. Unlike relievers who you can generally trust to get an opportunity to do their job, it's largely out of a starter's hands whether he gets there. 2 run lead in the ninth, most managers have a similar mindset. But 7 run lead after 5? A hit at 5 and 2/3? Every manager makes different decisions there.

I bring this up here because innings limits are clearly designed to force teams to actually have starting pitching. And I agree with that. I just think we need to find a less random stat for measuring it.
