I wanted to get an elite SP. An elite SP on a bargain contract is even rarer, and that's what Luis Castillo is. In exchange I give up Cruz, rental SP, and two decent prospects in Rios/Graterol
Right now, almost every single one of my prospects is a hitting prospect, which makes it so that I really need to acquire pitching through trades and/or FA. Luis Castillo should be with me for 4 years now, and then a 5th year for a qualifying offer. That will hopefully fit my window, if everything goes according to plan.
Cruz is amazing but who knows how many good years he has left in him. He should help Yankees this year for a playoff push for sure, though.
Graterol and Rios are hard to give up, but their value is cut short through Graterol being a non-closing RP and rios not having clear playing time. Rios in particular has performed well this year, though, and should be a good contributor to Yankees for years to come. He's the one I'm most nervous about losing in this trade.
The other people in this trade are mostly for salary type purposes. Bummer just got injured, but even if he's out this season I'm looking forward to having an elite RP for .5 next year (for competing or selling). Heyward/Wong I plan to not exercise their options for next year, but help with cap. Cobb is a replacement SP for Yankees
