I misunderstood this rule talking to Bryan a few weeks ago but getting around to posting about it now. May even be too late to address, and Byran was concerned about possible work stoppage but then we never really followed up further on it.
My thought is if we have a player with a real life contract that is already in existence then maintain the December 1st deadline...but real life free agents who do not have an actual contract yet, how about an extension on those guys?
Ex. Max Scherzer and Michael Brantley I have to make a decision by Dec 1st on whether to give a QO or accept real life contract but I have no idea unless they're signed in 2 weeks what their real life contract actually is. I'm assuming Scherzer is going to get like 30-40M per year but Brantley may get something like a 2 yr @ 15M per real life contract that might be doable.
If Brantley gets like a 3 yr @ 18M real life contract maybe I just give him the QO to avoid that 3rd year.
I guess it's too late to make a rule change for this year plus people have already accepted/declined contracts but maybe looking into the future. In this scenario I'm making two contract decisions over ghost contracts and on top of that I don't even know what real life team these guys will be on. I like Brantley on the Astros but if he gets more money to play for the Dbacks or something in a weak lineup I'm probably not as excited about him

I like the idea. I’m in a similar situation with Marcus Semien. Maybe let us accept the player if we know we want to retain them, but decide later on whether we prefer the QO or real life contract?

Well other years we let the deadline be March 15th. Or whenever they sign if it is later than that. This year we thought maybe it would give managers some more strategies on what to do.
The QO is meant to be a incentive and a benefit to use and in return gets more players to be put in auction and on our own contracts. It gets you another year of the player for a cheaper rate.
What about this idea?
You can give a player a Qualifying Offer if 1 year/$12M before December 15th. After that date, you can give them a Qualifying Offer of 1 year/$20M until March 15th.
So you have a decision to wait and see but pay a little more. Or do it early and save $8M.

If I were to be given a vote, I'd prefer the OG way and March 15th I thought that's how we had been doing it all along?
