I see a difference if a team simply "drops" a player instead of placing him on "waivers." I would say if you drop a player it's because that team is prepared to make a roster move immediately. If a team simply wants to waive a player then they have a period of time to work out a trade, say like in 48 hours.

 if u waive a player , u still drop him immediately , and make ur roster move , once placed to waivers u can not pull it back .... however the difference is this , if u straight drop a player u pay the half penalty , if u waive a player and no one claims him in 48 hours u pay the half penalty , if he is claimed in the 48 hours u pay no penalty .... it cant hurt u to always waive a player money wise ....

Well we might as well just have it automatic waivers if there doesn't need to be a choice. There is no advantage of dropping the player outright. I think the rule was intended at first was if you waive him you have to keep him on your roster UNTIL the 48 hours is up.

That is what I'm getting at.  If there is no difference then we should have all the players drop go through waivers don't matter which way the manager decides to drop them.
